Despite Billions Spent, Homelessness in WA Worsens—Braun Calls for New Approach

Sen. John Braun is calling attention to what he sees as the ongoing failure of Washington state leaders to effectively address homelessness, in light of a new federal executive order focused on getting individuals off the streets and into treatment for addiction or mental health needs. In a recent column, Braun criticized state Democrats for rejecting the federal shift while continuing to support what he calls ineffective, expensive strategies. He pointed to rising homelessness numbers despite record spending, particularly in King County, and argued that true progress will require greater accountability and a willingness to compel treatment when necessary. Braun emphasized that housing alone isn’t the solution—comprehensive care must be part of the path forward.
