Celebrate Safely: Experts Warn Fireworks Can Quickly Turn Festive into Dangerous

As fireworks light up skies across the country this summer, safety officials are reminding Americans that even a sparkler can send someone to the emergency room. In 2023, fireworks caused eight deaths and thousands of injuries nationwide—many involving burns to the hands and fingers. With most injuries occurring in the weeks leading up to the Fourth of July, fire and medical professionals urge caution, preparation, and common sense. Keep water nearby, steer clear of improvised “bottle rocket battles,” and skip home remedies for burns. “We want to celebrate the Fourth,” one fire chief said, “just not in the ER.” Always check your local laws, and when in doubt—leave it to the pros.
