A Valentine’s Day Bus Full of Love
To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Hope Mehlberg pulled off what most dog owners would consider impossible: getting a school bus full of dogs to sit calmly for a photo—while wearing heart-shaped headbands. The heart-melting images quickly spread online, showing two dozen happy pups lined up in their seats, buckled in and posing like seasoned pros.
From Office Burnout to Dog Bus Dreams
Mehlberg, the owner of K9 Konvoy in Oconto, Wisconsin, didn’t start out as a dog trainer. After years working a high-stress federal government job, she walked away from a career that left her unhappy and leaned into what brought her peace: caring for dogs. What began as walking her own dogs turned into helping neighbors and relatives—then blossomed into a full-fledged dog daycare business.
The Bus That Changed Everything
As K9 Konvoy grew, Mehlberg’s SUV simply couldn’t keep up with her expanding pack. So she bought a school bus and retrofitted it for canine passengers, complete with seat belts for safety. Each day, she transports nearly two dozen dogs to play, socialize, and burn off energy—earning the nickname “the magic bus” from pet parents amazed at how calmly their pups behave on board.
Routine, Treats, and a Lot of Patience
The secret behind the perfectly posed Valentine’s photos? Routine, consistency, and plenty of snacks. Mehlberg waits until the dogs are tired from play, then gently works her way down the aisle—headband on, treat given—never forcing a dog to participate. Over time, the dogs learn what to expect, and many happily join in.
Organized Chaos, Pure Joy
For Mehlberg, the bus may be “organized chaos,” but it’s the most fulfilling chaos she’s ever known. The daily greetings from her four-legged riders—and the joy her videos bring to millions online—are proof that sometimes, trading a conventional career for a calling filled with wagging tails is the best move of all.
