Southeastern House Speakers Call for Federal Action to Support Forestry Industry

Regional Leaders Unite for Economic Relief
Five Southeastern House Speakers are urging Congress to take immediate action to address non-tariff trade barriers impacting the region’s $36 billion forestry industry. Georgia Speaker of the House Jon Burns, joined by Alabama Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, Arkansas Speaker Brian S. Evans, Florida Speaker Danny Perez, and South Carolina Speaker Murrell Smith Jr., sent a letter Monday to members of Georgia’s congressional delegation seeking federal assistance.
A Vital Industry Under Pressure
“For generations, the forestry industry has been the backbone of South Georgia’s families and communities, supporting thousands of good-paying jobs for Georgians and generating billions in economic impact each year,” Burns said. He noted that the industry continues to face challenges from shifting markets, global uncertainty, and restrictive trade policies. The coalition of Speakers hopes federal partners will help stabilize the sector and ensure its longevity for future generations.
A Shared Commitment Across State Lines
Alabama Speaker Ledbetter echoed the call, highlighting the broader economic implications across the Southeast. “I am proud to work with Senator Britt and my fellow speakers from four Southeastern states to address non-tariff trade barriers impacting our $36 billion forestry industry,” Ledbetter said. “President Trump’s America-first approach to international trade has greatly benefited Alabama’s economy, and this issue presents another opportunity to protect jobs and drive growth in one of our state’s most vital industries.”
The joint appeal reflects a united front among Southern leaders committed to safeguarding the forestry industry, a key pillar of the regional economy, and underscores the growing demand for federal collaboration to address trade challenges and ensure sustainable growth.
