A schoolboy’s discovery on a remote Scottish beach has unearthed a remarkable piece of American Revolutionary War history. After a storm swept the sands of Sanday Island in the Orkneys, the wooden ribs of a long-lost British warship emerged—later identified as the Earl of Chatham, an 18th-century vessel that once escorted convoys during the American Revolution. Believed wrecked in 1788 after being repurposed for whaling, the ship’s remains have sparked a wave of community excitement and archaeological effort. Locals pitched in with tractors and trailers to preserve the 230-year-old wreck, now headed for display in Albany. Historians are calling it a “fascinating story” of survival, history, and the spirit of discovery.
