Indiana Senator Engages with Elementary Sixth Graders at Statehouse

Indiana State Sen. Jean Leising welcomed a group of bright and curious sixth-grade students from Everton Elementary School to the Statehouse on Tuesday, March 18. The visit provided an opportunity for the students to learn firsthand about the legislative process, as Leising took the time to share insights into her role as a state senator and the impact of state government on their daily lives.

Engaging with young students in civic education is a tradition embraced by legislatures across the country, helping to inspire the next generation of informed and active citizens. Many states have developed programs aimed at bringing students into the legislative process, offering them a chance to experience government in action. Virginia’s General Assembly, for instance, hosts the Capitol Classroom program, allowing students to step into the role of lawmakers, debate bills, and even cast votes using the same system as elected officials. Similarly, Maryland’s Student Page Program provides high school seniors with a hands-on experience assisting legislators during the legislative session.

Beyond individual state initiatives, national programs like the YMCA’s Youth and Government give students the opportunity to simulate the legislative process, taking on roles as lawmakers and crafting their own policies. In Washington, the Legislative Youth Advisory Council empowers young people to advise state lawmakers on issues that matter to them, fostering a direct line of communication between youth and government. Meanwhile, Tennessee’s Intercollegiate State Legislature engages college students in mock legislative sessions, offering a deeper dive into the workings of government.

Leising’s meeting with Everton Elementary students fits into this broader effort to ensure young people gain exposure to the legislative process, encouraging civic awareness and engagement. As the students explored the Statehouse and asked questions about how laws are made, they were given a glimpse into the vital role state government plays and the importance of participating in democracy.
