“Kentucky State University has stood as a cornerstone of this Commonwealth since 1886, shaping generations of leaders and expanding opportunity where it was too often limited,” said Sen. Gerald Neal. “What we are doing here is establishing a path to ensure that the institution remains strong, stable, and positioned to serve the students who depend on it.”

Expanding Access and Opportunity
Another key component of the plan focuses on accessibility. Expanded pathways for transfer students, adult learners, and nontraditional students are designed to open doors for more individuals seeking higher education.

The proposal also preserves important student experiences—ensuring that organizations, campus life, and academic diversity remain part of the university’s fabric. “After spending time with Dr. Akakpo, reviewing the challenges at the university, and hearing his vision for the future, we came to understand now is not the time to give up on Kentucky State, but to be a partner in redefining what this institution can be,” said Sen. Chris McDaniel.
