Declutter Your Mind This Spring

As spring continues to unfold, many of us begin to notice the shift—not just in the weather, but in ourselves. The longer days and fresh air can spark a sense that it’s time to reset, reorganize, and reclaim a little clarity in our daily lives.

Last week, health and wellness coach Heather Jenkins of Calm, Connect, Well encouraged readers to begin their spring reset by nourishing the body with foods that support energy, digestion, and balance. But wellness doesn’t stop at what’s on our plates.

In Week 2 of her four-part series, Spring Cleaning Your Health: A Whole-Person Reset, Jenkins turns attention to something many of us overlook: the clutter inside our minds.

Just as closets and cabinets accumulate things we no longer need, our schedules and thoughts can quietly become overloaded with commitments, distractions, and constant noise. Jenkins says clearing that mental clutter is essential for restoring calm, improving focus, and supporting overall health.

This week’s theme, “Clear the Mental Clutter,” encourages readers to slow down, protect their time, and create small daily rituals that allow the nervous system to reset.

Below is Heather Jenkins’ Week 2 guide to finding a little more calm and clarity this spring.

Week 2: Clear the Mental Clutter

Why Mental Decluttering Matters

We declutter closets, but rarely our minds. Mental overload is one of the biggest contributors to stress hormones staying elevated. Chronic stress impacts sleep, digestion, and hormone balance, often in ways we don’t immediately recognize.

When our minds are constantly racing from one responsibility to the next, the body struggles to return to a calm state. Over time, that constant tension can leave us feeling exhausted, unfocused, and emotionally drained.

Spring offers a natural reminder that renewal is possible. Just as we clear physical spaces to create room for fresh energy, the same principle applies to mental space. Creating moments of stillness allows the nervous system to slow down and helps restore balance.

Creating a Morning Reset

One of the simplest ways to begin calming your nervous system is by reclaiming the first few minutes of your morning.

Instead of immediately reaching for your phone and diving into emails, news, or social media, consider creating a short reset ritual. Even ten minutes of intentional quiet can make a meaningful difference in how the rest of the day unfolds.

Your reset ritual doesn’t have to be complicated. It could include deep breathing, prayer, journaling, stretching, or simply sitting quietly with a cup of coffee. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s creating a small boundary that protects your peace before the outside world begins making demands on your time and attention.

Those few intentional minutes can set the tone for the entire day.

Reevaluating Your Commitments

Mental clarity also comes from reducing unnecessary commitments.

Many people carry obligations on their calendars simply because they feel they should, not because they truly want to. Over time, these commitments can accumulate and quietly drain energy.

Take a look at your schedule and ask yourself a simple question: Does this align with my energy and season of life?

Spring is about renewal, not overcommitment. It is perfectly acceptable to step back from events, committees, or obligations that leave you feeling depleted rather than fulfilled.

Protecting your time is one of the most powerful forms of self-respect. When we create space in our schedules, we allow room for rest, creativity, connection, and the activities that genuinely bring us joy.

This Week’s Action Step

Commit to 10 phone-free minutes each morning for the next seven days.

Use that time to breathe deeply, stretch gently, or journal one page of thoughts. You may be surprised how much clarity can come from simply beginning the day without digital noise.

Sometimes the most meaningful reset doesn’t require doing more—it begins with doing a little less.
