Why Those Neon Snack Colors Are Starting to Disappear

If you’ve walked down a cereal or snack aisle lately, you might have noticed something changing. The neon blues and electric reds that defined our childhood snacks are slowly fading.  As a mom of two active boys and a coach to hundreds of women, I’m often asked: “Rosemary, is  this just another food trend, or should I actually be concerned?”

The truth is, 2026 is a landmark year for what we put on our tables. We are currently witnessing a massive shift in how the U.S. regulates synthetic, petroleum-based dyes.

The Science Catching Up to the Plate

For years, many of us in the wellness space have raised eyebrows at ingredients like Red 40,  Yellow 5, and Blue 1. Recent findings have finally pushed federal and state regulators to act.  The FDA has officially begun a major phase-out of several synthetic dyes, following growing research linking these additives to neurobehavioral issues and hyperactivity in children.

Even more significant is the “ripple effect” started by the California Food Safety Act. As of this year, we are seeing a “handshake” agreement between the government and major food manufacturers to remove these chemicals from the national school lunch program. The goal? To ensure our kids’ brains are fueled by real nutrients, not laboratory-created colors.

Natural Doesn’t Always Mean “Simple”

The FDA recently updated its rules to allow companies to label products as having “No  Artificial Colors” if they’ve switched to natural sources like beet juice, spirulina, or turmeric.  While this is a huge step forward, as your coach, I want to remind you of a core RB Coaching principle: Natural doesn’t always mean intentional.

Just because a fruit snack uses purple carrot extract instead of Red 40 doesn’t mean it isn’t still packed with processed sugars that spike your insulin and crash your energy. The “dye-free” label is a win, but it isn’t a hall pass to stop reading the rest of the ingredients.

Eating with Intention

At RB Coaching, I’ve helped hundreds of men and women move away from the “labels-first”  trap and toward intentional eating. When we focus on eating naturally, we aren’t just avoiding  “the bad stuff”—we are choosing the “good stuff” that builds physical strength and mental clarity.

Whether you’re a busy mom trying to stabilize your kids’ moods or a professional woman looking to hit a new PR in the gym, your fuel matters. My mission has always been to simplify this for you. We don’t do “diets” here; we build a lifestyle where you recognize that the most vibrant colors in your kitchen should come from the earth, not a test tube.

The Bottom Line

The headlines about food dyes are a great reminder to stay vigilant, but don’t let them overwhelm you. Start small. Swap one “neon” snack this week for a whole-food alternative.

You have the power to curate what enters your home. By choosing foods that are as strong and  authentic as you are, you’re setting a standard for the next generation.
