Indiana Honors Alvin and Elsie Miller for Contributions to State Tourism

Alvin and Elsie Miller of Shipshewana, Indiana, were recently honored with the 2025 Will Koch Indiana Tourism Leadership Award, presented by the Indiana Destination Development Corporation. State Rep. Joanna King joined the ceremony, which highlighted the Millers’ role in sustaining one of the region’s major visitor destinations.
The award recognizes individuals who have made notable contributions to tourism and economic activity within the state. It is Indiana’s highest tourism honor.
A Local Landmark Rebuilt After Fire
The Millers are owners of the Davis Mercantile, a multi-level retail complex in Shipshewana that originated as the Old Davis Hotel. In 2004, a fire destroyed the structure. With assistance from members of the local Amish community, the Millers rebuilt the facility, which today houses more than 20 stores featuring a range of goods and services, from quilting and crafts to toys, entertainment, and food.
The site draws more than two million visitors annually, making it a significant contributor to the area’s tourism activity.
Highlighting Small Businesses and Local Vendors
Rep. King noted that the Davis Mercantile serves as a hub for local artisans, small businesses, and vendors who sell products and services connected to regional traditions and craftsmanship. She said the Millers have maintained a destination that offers visitors an opportunity to shop, eat, and engage with locally operated businesses.
About the Will Koch Indiana Tourism Leadership Award
Nominations for the Will Koch Indiana Tourism Leadership Award are submitted by individuals working in Indiana’s travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors, as well as by community leaders. The honor is presented once a year and is named for the late Will Koch, former owner and president of Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari.
The award was established by Visit Indiana and the Koch family to recognize contributions to tourism, business, and community development, as well as to highlight the broader economic importance of tourism across the state.
Acknowledging Contributions to Indiana’s Tourism Industry
During the ceremony, the IDDC cited the Millers’ long-term stewardship of the Davis Mercantile and its role in consistently attracting visitors to northern Indiana. The recognition also underscores the value of tourism as a statewide economic sector and the individuals who help maintain destinations that draw travelers.
