Texas Celebrates Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Day, Spotlighting Resilience and Growth

Celebrating the Spirit of Determination

Today, Texas celebrates Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Day — a recognition established by the 2023 Blake Pyron Act — honoring the business owners whose innovation and perseverance continue to shape the state’s economy and strengthen communities.

Governor Greg Abbott’s official proclamation emphasizes that the “Texas of tomorrow is built by the many entrepreneurs who have built our thriving economy.” It highlights the importance of supporting innovation across all sectors — including those led by Texans with disabilities — and reaffirms the state’s commitment to helping every entrepreneur reach their full potential.

“The Lone Star State is committed to helping entrepreneurs with disabilities access the resources they need to turn their dreams into reality,” Governor Abbott stated. “By reducing the obstacles that these enterprising men and women face, we prove that it is not our challenges that define us, but rather how we overcome them.”

Building a Stronger, More Inclusive Economy

Entrepreneurs with disabilities are represented across industries — from technology and retail to hospitality, the arts, and beyond. Their work contributes to a more dynamic economy and serves as a model of creativity and perseverance. These individuals not only create jobs but also foster inclusive design and community engagement, enriching the fabric of Texas life.

The annual observance provides an opportunity to recognize these trailblazers and encourage communities, businesses, and organizations to amplify their stories. Entrepreneurship for people with disabilities is more than an economic pursuit — it’s a path toward independence, empowerment, and systemic change.

Statewide Support and Resources

Texas offers multiple programs designed to assist entrepreneurs with disabilities in starting, managing, and expanding their businesses. Among them are:

  • Texas Workforce Solutions Vocational Rehabilitation Services, which provides support for individuals seeking self-employment and business owners who develop disabilities later in life.
  • Governor’s Small Business Summits, hosted across Texas, offering insights and resources to entrepreneurs of all backgrounds.
  • Texas Economic Development Division, which guides business creation and growth.
  • Texas Small Business Credit Initiative, extending capital access and loan guarantees to marginalized business owners, including those with disabilities.
  • Small Business Administration (SBA) programs, offering mentorship, funding, and training opportunities.
  • Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), a nonprofit that delivers free business mentoring and workshops to aspiring and current business owners.

Through these initiatives, Texas continues to demonstrate its dedication to creating a business environment where every individual — regardless of ability — has the chance to succeed.

A New Perspective on Entrepreneurship

To complement this year’s observance, the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities will host a free webinar, “Disability and Business: A New Perspective on Entrepreneurship,” on October 21, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The session will highlight stories of resilience and provide guidance for navigating the resources available to entrepreneurs across the state.

Participants will hear from experts and business owners who have successfully turned their ideas into thriving enterprises. The event aims to inspire and equip attendees to overcome barriers and seize opportunities in the Texas business landscape.

A Message of Resilience and Unity

Governor Abbott’s proclamation, co-signed by First Lady Cecilia Abbott, encourages all Texans to observe Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Day through “appropriate programs and activities.” It stands as a testament to the belief that strength is found not in circumstance, but in perseverance.

As Texans celebrate this special day, the message is clear — the state’s entrepreneurial spirit knows no limits. From small startups to growing enterprises, entrepreneurs with disabilities continue to embody the best of Texas: independence, innovation, and unwavering determination.
