HireAbility Campaign Marks a Decade of Expanding Workforce Opportunities in Texas

Governor Greg Abbott has announced the 10th annual Texas HireAbility campaign, a statewide initiative led by the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities in partnership with the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). The campaign, recognized each October, highlights the benefits of hiring people with disabilities while celebrating their contributions to workplaces across Texas.

“Every October, we honor the nearly two million Texans with disabilities who strengthen our workforce and make our state great,” said Governor Abbott. “In Texas, we open the doors of opportunity for all people. Because when everyone has the chance to work and succeed, our state succeeds. Only in Texas can a young man have his back broken in half and rise up to become Governor of the greatest state in the nation. Through the HireAbility campaign and Disability Employee Awareness Month, we are building a Texas where every Texan can achieve their dreams.”

A Legacy of Advocacy

The Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities, established in 1950, has worked for decades to ensure Texans with disabilities have full and equal access to independence, productivity, and self-determination. The Governor appoints twelve members to the committee—seven of whom must be people with disabilities—along with representatives from eight state agencies who serve in ex-officio or advisory roles.

The committee advises the Governor and Legislature on disability-related issues, promotes compliance with disability laws, and recognizes businesses, media professionals, and students who advance opportunities and positive depictions of Texans with disabilities. It also provides technical assistance, referrals, and information on issues including accessibility, education, housing, employment, transportation, health, and veterans’ needs.

Employer Forum Today in San Antonio

The Texas HireAbility Employer Forum is taking place today, October 2, 2025, at Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio. The forum features bestselling author and TEDx speaker Dr. Daniel Wendler, along with leading employers such as Toyotetsu, Accenture, Christus Alamo Heights Hospital, and Southwest Research Institute. Each will share best practices in building inclusive workplaces.

The event also highlights the Lex Frieden Employment Awards, which honor individuals and organizations that demonstrate a strong commitment to hiring and supporting Texans with disabilities.

“Texas’ workforce is made stronger by tapping into the skills, talents, and contributions of Texans of all abilities,” said Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett. “I am honored to join the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities in celebrating the 10th anniversary of Texas HireAbility. TWC is committed to empowering individuals with disabilities and enabling employers to succeed in the Texas economy, during this campaign and always.”

Inclusive Hiring and Recognition

The HireAbility campaign includes the “We Hire Ability” recognition program, which honors Texas-based businesses with a workforce of at least 10% employees with disabilities. Recognized businesses receive a We Hire Ability decal, both online and for their physical locations, symbolizing their dedication to inclusive hiring practices.

“Texas HireAbility isn’t just about filling jobs; it’s about unlocking the immense potential and diverse skills that people with disabilities bring to our workplaces,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III. “Every Texan deserves the opportunity to contribute their talents, and this campaign helps break down barriers and build a stronger, more equitable workforce for all.”

Building Momentum

The HireAbility campaign complements TWC’s Vocational Rehabilitation program, which last year served more than 69,000 Texans with disabilities and helped over 10,000 achieve their employment goals. This year’s campaign also aligns with the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, underscoring the state’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

“Many of Texas’ most successful employers proudly make disability inclusion a priority in the workplace, and we want to encourage all businesses to leverage this talent pipeline,” added TWC Chairman Joe Esparza.
