Indiana Leaders Unite in Condemnation of Charlie Kirk’s Murder

In a rare and powerful bipartisan moment, Indiana state representatives Beau Baird (R-Greencastle) and Victoria Garcia Wilburn (D-Fishers) jointly condemned the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, calling for an urgent cultural shift away from political violence and toward civil discourse.
The lawmakers, who serve as co-chairs of the Indiana Future Caucus — a group of Gen Z and millennial legislators under the age of 45 — released a united statement one day after Kirk was fatally shot while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. The tragedy sent shockwaves through the political world and reignited national conversations about safety, free speech, and the deepening divide across ideological lines.
“Political violence is never okay,” their statement began. “Taking someone’s life is never an acceptable way to settle differences of opinion.”
The bipartisan duo went on to draw parallels to another recent tragedy: the murder earlier this year of a Democratic state lawmaker in Minnesota and her husband, which also drew national outcry and condemnation. “Earlier this year, our bipartisan caucus spoke out against the tragic murder of a Democratic Minnesota state representative and her husband. Today, we unequivocally condemn the murder of Republican activist and commentator Charlie Kirk,” they wrote.
Both representatives emphasized that these acts of violence — regardless of political affiliation — must be universally denounced. “As a nation, we must move beyond this horrifying trend of harming or killing those you disagree with and return to a culture of spirited debate and respect for different viewpoints.”
Their message comes amid rising concerns about the safety of public figures in a time of heightened polarization. From threats against school board members and state legislators to violent confrontations at rallies and college campuses, many Americans — regardless of party — are voicing fears about the erosion of civil dialogue.
Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was known for his unapologetically conservative views and outspoken campus activism. His murder has drawn responses from across the political spectrum, with fellow conservatives labeling the act “political terrorism” and some progressives expressing sorrow over the violence, even while disagreeing with Kirk’s ideology.
Baird and Garcia Wilburn’s response, however, focused not on politics, but on humanity.
“The Indiana Future Caucus represents the bright tomorrow we can create for Hoosiers — and political violence should not exist in that future,” their statement concluded. “Our prayers are with Charlie’s wife Erika, his children, and all who loved him during this heartbreaking time.”
The Indiana Future Caucus aims to bridge generational and ideological divides through collaboration and common purpose. Currently, 32 millennial lawmakers serve in the Indiana General Assembly. The caucus is expected to release additional updates in the coming weeks regarding leadership transitions and policy priorities.
As the investigation into Kirk’s murder continues, leaders like Baird and Garcia Wilburn are urging Americans to pause, reflect, and recommit to the foundational ideals of peaceful discourse, democratic engagement, and mutual respect — values that transcend party lines.
