Red Dye 40 and Beyond: Why It’s Time to Rethink What We’re Feeding Our Families

At Think American News, we believe informed choices begin with awareness—and when it comes to what we’re feeding ourselves and our families, that awareness is more important than ever. In this eye-opening piece, health and wellness expert Rosemary Bonner, CEO of RB Coaching exposes the hidden dangers of artificial food dyes, the alarming truth behind Red Dye 40, and why clean eating is about far more than calorie counts. If you’re ready to take a closer look at what’s really on your plate, start here.

As parents, adults, and leaders in our families, we’re constantly trying to make the best decisions for our health and the health of our loved ones. But one of the biggest dangers we face isn’t what we see—it’s what we don’t see.

Let’s talk about something that’s sitting in your pantry, hiding in your kids’ lunchboxes, and likely snuck into your last snack: artificial food dyes. Red Dye 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1… these might sound harmless, but the truth is alarming. At RB Coaching, we’re not just here to help you get stronger physically—we’re here to help you become more informed, more empowered, and more in control of what you feed your body and your mind.

Red Dye 40: A Legal Poison?

Red Dye 40 is one of the most commonly used food dyes in the U.S.—found in everything from cereals and fruit snacks to sports drinks and even some medications. And yet, studies have linked it to behavioral issues in children, including hyperactivity, anxiety, and learning difficulties.  Some research suggests it may even be a potential carcinogen. Think about that: a substance linked to cancer is being marketed directly to our kids in colorful, “fun” foods.

Countries like the U.K. have already taken a stand. They’ve banned or restricted these dyes and require warning labels when they’re used. But in the United States? Many of these chemicals are still considered “safe”—not because they are, but because the long-term research isn’t conclusive enough to force regulation.

But do we really need a tragedy to happen before we open our eyes?

What Else Is Being Slipped In?

It’s not just Red Dye 40. Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Blue 1 are also synthetic dyes derived from petroleum—yes, the same stuff used to make gasoline. These dyes have been linked to allergic reactions, migraines, and inflammation. Inflammation, especially, is the silent trigger behind so many issues women face in midlife: bloating, joint pain, weight gain, mood swings, and autoimmune flares.

It’s not about weight loss. It’s about cellular health. Mental clarity. Longevity. Energy. And if we want to thrive—not just survive—through every phase of womanhood, it starts with reading the labels.

You Can’t Heal a Body You’re Still Poisoning

At RB Coaching, we encourage all our clients to become more mindful eaters—not just counting macros or calories, but questioning ingredients. Ask yourself: if you can’t pronounce it,  why would you put it in your body?

You don’t have to become obsessed. You just have to become aware.

Start simple:

• Look for “no artificial dyes” on the label.

• Opt for naturally colored foods made with beet juice, turmeric, or spirulina.  • Educate your children. Teach them what to look for, and why it matters.

Final Thoughts

You’re the gatekeeper of your health. Don’t wait for the FDA or the food industry to protect you —they won’t. It’s your job to dig deeper, ask questions, and make informed choices.

And I promise—when you start fueling your body with real, clean foods, you’ll feel the difference. Physically, mentally, emotionally.

Let’s start cleaning up what we put in our bodies. Because your energy, your mood, your future —it all matters.

From Red Dye 40 to Yellow 5, it’s clear we can’t rely on outdated regulations to protect our health. But as Rosemary reminds us, the power to change starts in our own kitchens. When we know better, we do better—and every label we read, every ingredient we question, brings us one step closer to vibrant, long-term wellness.
