Triple Homicide at Tucson Prison: Lawmaker Demands Answers as Violent Inmate Slips Through Cracks

In the wake of a tragic triple homicide at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Tucson, House Judiciary Chairman Quang Nguyen is demanding immediate answers and accountability from the Arizona Department of Corrections (ADCRR).
Three inmates were killed in what officials have described as a violent altercation on April 4 in the Cimarron Unit of the prison. The lone suspect named by the Department of Corrections is Ricky Wassenaar, a violent repeat offender with a notorious history, including a 2004 prison escape attempt and a hostage crisis that resulted in 16 life sentences. Wassenaar has been serving his sentences at various Arizona facilities, with a violent track record that raised concerns among correctional staff for years.
Chairman Nguyen has expressed outrage over the incident and sent a letter to ADCRR Director Ryan Thornell, demanding an investigation into the facility’s operations and the security of high-risk inmates. He emphasized the fact that Wassenaar, given his violent history, should not have been in a position to commit such a heinous act.
“The fact that Ricky Wassenaar — a violent criminal with an extensive history, including the 2004 hostage crisis at Lewis Prison — was able to take the lives of three fellow inmates demands an immediate and honest explanation,” Chairman Nguyen stated. “The public is entitled to know why someone serving multiple life sentences was not tightly secured. His capacity to kill three other inmates in a single day suggests that either the management and operation of the Tucson facility is incompetent, or our system has become dangerously lenient when firmness is required.”
Nguyen’s letter raises critical questions about ADCRR’s decisions, especially regarding Wassenaar’s placement in a lower-security unit despite his violent history, repeated disciplinary violations, and a confession to a previous killing inside his cell last year.
“The Department knew who Wassenaar was. They were warned. They ignored the warnings. Now, three people are dead,” Chairman Nguyen added. “This matter must not be brushed aside or left to internal spin. It demands more than an internal review — it demands openness and accountability to the public we serve. The safety of correctional staff and inmates alike depends on the Department’s ability to recognize and act upon clear warning signs.”
In his letter, Chairman Nguyen is requesting several critical documents and information, including a post-incident report, high-risk inmate protocols, records of Ricky Wassenaar’s past threats, and an explanation of how inmate violence is typically addressed within the system. He has set a deadline of May 13 for the Department to respond.
This tragic incident has sparked concerns across the state about the safety of Arizona’s prison facilities and whether proper procedures are in place to prevent such violent events. With Chairman Nguyen calling for greater transparency and accountability, all eyes will be on the Department of Corrections to ensure that appropriate actions are taken to prevent future tragedies and improve the safety and security of Arizona’s correctional institutions.
